Mathematics in Hungerford School and Children’s Centre.

According to our children, Mathematics at Hungerford is one of the most popular subjects offering as it does the challenge, development of numeracy skills and potential for practical applications and problem solving.

At Hungerford our Maths teaching aims to combine practical and investigational approaches to problem solving with a secure understanding of mental strategies for calculating, knowledge of number properties and knowledge of number operations as well as reasoning about numbers, shape, space, measures and data handling.

Where possible we will link Maths to the teaching of art, humanities, science and design and technology. However, we recognize the need to consolidate and deepen the learning as well as to practise and rehearse skills and to this end we ensure that every class is taught through a Daily Maths lesson.

In addition we feel that alongside problem solving and practical applications, Speaking and Listening provides one of the most important opportunities for children to practise their skills and explore their understanding. In helping our children see Maths as an enjoyable, creative and relevant subject we aim to foster in them a positive and confident attitude about both mathematics and the wider world.
