At Hungerford School & Children’s Centre we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class & school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE & C, SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
We teach PSHE & C in a variety of ways: as a discrete subject, through SEAL lessons, via assemblies and through other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, Literacy, Maths and Science, as well as through outdoor educational visits, community work and activities.
Sex and Relationship Education
The 1986 Education Act places a responsibility on the governing body of each school to determine a policy for Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) within that school.
We believe that SRE should be presented as an integrated part of the curriculum concerned with making appropriate choices as well as providing knowledge.
SRE is presented to children in an appropriate curriculum context according to their progression through the school. As they reach the later primary years, there is a need for specific teaching of sex education, particularly with Year 5 and 6 pupils.
Parents are invited to view audio visual materials that are used in the delivery of class sessions.
Parents have a right to withdraw their children from SRE if they wish to do so.
